Third Graders Correspond with the White House!
Miss Nygaard’s third grade class at Edmunds Elementary recently learned about the art of letter-writing. The students focused on correctly addressing a letter, starting the letter with a greeting, sharing information, asking questions and concluding with an appropriate closing. Students practiced by writing to each other, their parents and other teachers about various issues. As a conclusion to their letter-writing unit the students wrote letters to President Obama. They shared what they had been learning, asked questions about his job and the First Family, and shared a little about their lives. The class mailed the letters off and were thrilled to receive a reply from the White House! The response contained pictures of the Obama family and their pets, and also included an interview with the president that answered many of the questions they had asked in their letters. The third graders were excited to see their work in the classroom being applied to the real world, and felt special to be in correspondence with the White House! It was a great conclusion to a fun and instructive writing unit.
