Drake Football Players are Mentors and Reading Buddies for Edmunds 5th Graders
Every Friday during the Drake University football season, Drake football players come to Edmunds during the lunch hour to mentor 5th grade students. Students are rewarded with the visits by their teachers for demonstrating positive and appropriate behavior during the week. The select Edmund students are treated to eating their lunch in the school’s multipurpose room as they get to know the Drake football players.
Afterwards Edmund students read to their partner players, share with them their interests and what they are doing in school. Then during recess, Edmund students enjoy a game of catch with their new found friends. This is a great opportunity to promote literacy and commitment to our Edmunds students, and the partnership reinforces life skills such as dedication, teamwork, and being a positive role model in the community.
