IELC Students

In order to help students new to the country adjust to schools in Des Moines, Des Moines Public Schools provides a special program called the Intensive English Language Center, or IELC.  Students in Mrs. Davidson’s second and third grade IELC class have been learning about community helpers. Doctors, mail carriers, police officers, librarians, fire fighters, teachers and store owners are some of the different jobs they have learned about. They are understanding the differences between the people and the places where they work. With the help of practicum student Deb Burford, the students have created mini-communities for the classroom. Through writing, they are exploring what types of community helpers they might like to be when they grow up.
