4th & 5th Graders Learn “Zentangle” in Art

Art classes at Edmunds are learning about “Zentangle,” a style of art that uses images over and over again in executing a drawing with dramatic patterns. These patterns are used in broad or detailed designs throughout the student’s works. The students have learned to compare this style of art to quilting and to the work of the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. Art instructor David Borzo reports that by creating and using these detailed patterns – and taking the time to create the impressive pattern effects – that the students are also learning about the strength of patience in creating art.

Other art classes are working on the project “What Are You Thinking?” that uses a photo of the student in a drawing that they do. The point of the piece is to share visually what’s on the mind of the student. The images that have captured students imaginations have ranged from race cars to animals to a home with a large front yard with trees, flowers and sunshine. The project t has been fun and instructive for all grade
